Velma Q. Newsome
For many of us, having a beautifully decorated bedroom is normal and often times taken for granted. While visiting and working in various group homes for many years, Velma noticed the rooms, at most, had white/beige linens, bare walls without pictures, rugs or accessories. In 2008, Velma founded Tatianna's Room.
Born and raised in Newark, NJ, a city heralded as one of the most culturally diverse in the world, Velma is the middle of three daughter's raised by her mother. She was raised with a strong awareness of beauty in art, culture, and people.
Velma's desire to engage in social justice work grew during her employment at the Head Start program, while helping low-income families and their children and employees at other non-profit organizations mentoring children living in group homes.
Who is Tatianna? Well, Tatianna is the daughter Velma never had. While working on these projects, Velma will have the joy of decorating her daughter's room over and over again through the lives of all the the children's rooms she decorates, be it boy or girl.
